Suhar – The first International Arabic Calligraphy Forum opened on Monday in Suhar. Organised by Directorate General of Culture, Sports and Youth in North Batinah with support of Petroleum Development Oman, the forum will run till September 24.

Fifty-nine calligraphers from Oman and across the Arab world are taking part in the event, which aims to highlight the richness of Arabic calligraphy and its role in the region’s cultural and artistic life.

Nada bint Nasser al Shaibani, Director of Department of Culture at the Directorate General of Culture, Sports and Youth in North Batinah, said the forum is part of efforts to showcase authentic Arabic arts and to foster communication among calligraphy practitioners.

“The event aims to highlight Arab artistic heritage, raise the standards of calligraphers locally and internationally, discover emerging talents, and create an environment for exchanging expertise and developing skills,” she said.

Nada added that the forum has brought together a distinguished group of calligraphers and experts from around the Arab world, offering an interactive platform to exchange knowledge, explore the aesthetics of Arabic calligraphy, and underline its role in preserving cultural identity and enriching the visual arts.

The event also features an art exhibition with more than 89 works of Arabic calligraphy, including 21 by international artists. The exhibition provides a rich visual experience that reflects the diversity of Arabic calligraphic styles and the spirit of contemporary creativity.

Among the forum’s highlights are live calligraphy sessions, where visitors can watch artists create works in real time, offering a unique interactive experience. Specialised workshops are also being held, including sessions on the foundations of Naskh script, the techniques of Kufic and Maghrebi calligraphy, as well as a ‘Pen and Art’ workshop introducing the artistic dimensions of Arabic calligraphy.

Additionally, exhibitions are held during the forum, including showcases dedicated to Omani calligraphers and artists from participating countries.
