Sightings confirm stable population of Arabian gazelle in Masirah Island

14 Sep 2025 Arabian gazelles sighted during national biodiversity survey By OUR CORRESPONDENT

Muscat – Environment Authority (EA) has announced that a field team from the National Biodiversity Survey Project recently documented sightings of the Arabian gazelle in Masirah Island, South Sharqiyah. The sightings are seen as a positive indicator of the stable status of this unique species, which forms a vital part of the island’s wildlife.

The sightings were confirmed through photographs captured by camera traps placed as part of the survey. It underscores the ongoing efforts of EA and its partners to protect wildlife and conserve biodiversity across the sultanate.

The project employed advanced methods, including satellite tracking technology and camera traps, to monitor wildlife in their natural habitats.

Officials noted that this latest scientific record contributes valuable data to the understanding of local species and bolsters conservation plans and programmes. It also reflects Oman’s strong commitment to safeguarding its rich natural heritage for future generations.

In the sultanate, the Arabian gazelle is known to be distributed in the Hajar mountains of the north, desert plains in central Oman, and Jabal Samhan foothills and Nejd area in the south.

Researchers reported the first confirmed record of the Arabian gazelle in Masirah island in 2023. This finding was part of a national survey of biodiversity in which 29 camera traps were set up to survey a major part of the island of about 400sqkm. Only two camera traps documented Arabian gazelle in an area covering 22sqkm. The survey on the island suggested that the population is small and isolated.
