Asir, Saudi Arabia – Severe thunderstorms and flash flooding tore through the southwestern region of Saudi Arabia on the night of Wednesday, August 27, with Muhayil in the Asir governorate bearing the brunt of the heavy rain. Torrential waters inundated the streets, sweeping numerous vehicles away in a dramatic display of nature’s force.
The National Centre for Meteorology (NCM) issued an urgent weather alert on Thursday, forecasting continued moderate to heavy rainfall across at least 10 regions, including Najran, Jazan, Asir, Al Baha, Mecca, and Medina. The centre warned that these conditions could lead to flooding, hail, and strong winds, and added that dust and sandstorms may also reduce visibility in parts of the kingdom.
Amid the escalating situation, meteorological authorities have urged the public to exercise caution and follow official directives. Residents in affected areas are being advised to stay alert to evolving weather updates, avoid flood-prone areas and valleys, and remain vigilant while traveling.
These developments follow earlier forecasts issued by the NCM in mid-August warning of prolonged rainfall and potential flooding across southwestern and central regions—including Jazan, Asir, Al Baha, Mecca, Tabuk, Medina, Riyadh, and Najran. The Civil Defence had cautioned residents to avoid vulnerable locations and remain indoors where possible.
