Muscat – Ministry of Transport, Communications and Information Technology (MTCIT) has announced that the name ‘Shahin’ has been selected for Oman’s first unified national electric vehicle (EV) charging application.
The decision follows a nationwide public survey launched earlier this month to involve citizens and residents in naming the app. Shahin, which carries connotations of power, speed and vision, was chosen as it reflects a national identity closely tied to energy and sustainable mobility.
The app, currently under development, will integrate services offered by multiple operators, providing a central platform for EV users across the sultanate. It is expected to streamline access to charging stations and eventually expand to serve the wider GCC region.
In a statement, MTCIT said the unified platform represents ‘a milestone in Oman’s green mobility transition’ and underlines efforts to strengthen the infrastructure needed for the country’s zero carbon transport strategy. The ministry added that the app’s official visual identity will be launched soon.
The app is part of a broader roadmap for sustainable transport. By the end of 2024, Oman had rolled out more than 25 projects and pilot programmes in this sector, including introduction of biofuels in public transport, installation of over 150 EV chargers nationwide, and registration of more than 1,500 EVs. Trials for hydrogen-powered vehicles are also ongoing.
MTCIT aims to operationalise Shahin this year, with future plans including replacing government fleets with EVs and developing green lanes for hydrogen trucks.
