Muscat – Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Water Resources (MAFWR) has announced that the shrimp fishing season in Oman will start on September 1 and continue for three months.
The ministry stated that shrimps are one of the most significant marine resources in the country, owing to their high nutritional value and growing demand in both domestic and international markets.
The season holds particular importance for the governorates of South Sharqiyah, Dhofar and Al Wusta, where shrimp fisheries contribute to the livelihood of local fishermen and support the economy.
There are 12 species of shrimps found in Oman’s waters, though only four varieties are traditionally caught using nets. These include white Indian shrimp, white shrimp, tiger prawns and dotted shrimp.
Shrimp habitats are concentrated in the waters surrounding Masirah Island, Mahout, the coastal areas of Al Wusta, and along the coastal strip of South Sharqiyah.
