Dhofar is hosting a record number of tourists this year who are visiting to enjoy the khareef season in all its glory. But with increased footfall, there is growing concern of overtourism

in Dhofar during khareef. What can be done to curb the traffic and overcrowding? Here is what Muscat Daily readers said –

Yes, overtourism in Dhofar is becoming a major concern. Roads get congested and it’s hard for locals to move around. I think introducing entry permits during peak weekends and encouraging weekday travel could help. Also, developing nearby towns like Taqah and Mirbat with better facilities can distribute tourist flow more evenly.

We’re happy to welcome tourists, but the environment and infrastructure are under pressure. Some areas become overcrowded and lose their charm with garbage. Better public transport options, eco-friendly shuttles and designated tourist zones could help. It’s important to maintain the beauty of Salalah for both visitors and future generations.

Yes, overtourism is seriously becoming a big concern for tourists like me who visit Dhofar during khareef. Dhofar really needs to maintain old roads and build new ones to minimise traffic in heavily crowded spots as quickly as possible.

Tourism boosts our economy, but too much of it strains resources. Traffic jams are frequent and garbage has increased in natural spots. A cap on vehicles entering key areas, more policing and awareness campaigns on respecting nature can go a long way. We need sustainable tourism – not just numbers.

Khareef is magical, but it felt overcrowded this year. Parking was difficult and restaurants were overwhelmed. I suggest more guided group tours, clear visitor caps at fragile locations and timed entry passes. Technology and better coordination can balance tourism without ruining the local experience. Also, I feel that there can be more encouragement to use public transport than opt for rent-a-car.

Visiting Dhofar nowadays has become quite troublesome because of all the traffic there. If new roads can’t be built, more options for public transport – like buses – could be provided and promoted.

I think overtourism is a growing issue all across Oman; it’s not a problem exclusive to Dhofar. That said, I would appreciate it if authorities there took some initiative to address the overcrowding caused by this rise in tourism. Enforcing stricter traffic laws around tourist hotspots would definitely help.
