Salalah – Environment Authority installed a compass on the summit of Jabal Samhan, Dhofar on Monday in cooperation with National Survey Authority and Royal Air Force of Oman.

Located within the Jabal Samhan Nature Reserve, the compass marks the highest point in Dhofar.

The summit at 1,757.6m above sea level now has a stone pedestal featuring a metal compass plate marking the four cardinal directions and pointing to nearby environmental and tourism sites.

Zahran Ahmed al Abdulsalam, Director General of Environment in Dhofar, said the compass installation  aims to establish the site as a landmark of environmental, tourism and cultural significance.

“The compass offers an opportunity for visitors and researchers to connect with the mountain’s ecological and geographic features,” he said.

The installation is also intended to support scientific research and conservation. By documenting key aspects of Jabal Samhan Nature Reserve, it is expected to aid conservation and raise awareness on the area’s biodiversity.

Jabal Samhan is recognised as an ecotourism destination, known for its distinct ecosystem. Installation of the compass is expected to attract more visitors while reinforcing conservation efforts.

Abdulsalam called on the public to visit the site, noting that it serves both tourism and environmental education goals.
