3D-printed reefs to boost marine life off Seeb coast

Muscat – Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Water Resources has begun installing 3D-printed artificial coral reef units off the coast of Seeb in partnership with local technology firm InnoTech in an effort to support the fisheries sector and enhance marine ecosystems.

The project uses advanced 3D printing technology to create concrete reef structures that replicate the complexity of natural coral. The artificial reefs are designed to serve as critical habitats for marine life and reinforce coastal resilience.

“InnoTech has developed a 3D concrete printer and used this advanced technology to design artificial coral reefs that contribute to supporting marine biodiversity and providing an ideal environment for marine life,” a ministry official said.

The 3D printing process involves layering concrete with high precision to build detailed reef forms. After printing, the structures are cured to ensure durability and then placed underwater, where these are monitored to assess colonisation by marine species and broader ecological impact.

Installation in Seeb follows earlier phases in Sur and Liwa. “We began the first pilot phase in Sur with simple installations. The second phase in Liwa saw installation of 17 units at a depth of 25m,” the official said.

The reef units deployed in Seeb are designed to anchor firmly to the seabed. Each unit weighs between three and seven tonnes and features multiple openings to facilitate fish movement and coral growth. The structures, measuring between 8m and 36m, are made of compressed, environmentally friendly concrete materials.

The ministry stated that the initiative is aimed at increasing fish stocks, promoting marine biodiversity, supporting local fishing communities and encouraging ecotourism. “The project supports marine sustainability with an innovative and environmentally friendly solution,” the official added.
