Rome, Italy – The second round of negotiations between Iran and the United States ended in the Italian capital Rome on Saturday with both sides agreeing to meet again next week to continue the talks.
The Islamic Republic’s civilian nuclear programme and lifting American sanctions against the country were on the agenda of discussions in Rome.
The Iranian delegation was led by Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi and the US President Donald Trump’s Middle East envoy Steve Witkoff.
Araghchi said technical discussions at the level of experts will begin in Oman on Wednesday before another round of talks.
“Naturally, experts have more time to delve into the details and work on designing a framework for an agreement. Then, next Saturday, we will meet again in Oman to review results of the experts’ work and assess how close we are to the core elements of an agreement,” he said.
Iranian state media described the talks as ‘constructive’. ‘As a result of this constructive atmosphere which has been created, the three delegations from Iran Oman and the US will hold more indirect talks,’ state television said. The talks were a follow-up of negotiations held last week in Muscat.
Oman Foreign Minister H E Sayyid Badr bin Hamad al Busaidi mediated the talks again, shuffling between the two delegations to convey messages in Rome.
Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baqaei said the talks continued to be conducted indirectly, as in Muscat, and H E Sayyid Badr had a busy day conveying messages between the two delegations.
In a statement, Oman’s Foreign Ministry said, ‘It is only in dialogue and clear communication that we will be able to achieve a mutually credible agreement and understanding for the benefit of all concerned regionally and internationally’.
Following the talks, H E Sayyid Badr posted on X, “I would like to thank the Iranian Foreign Minister and US Presidential Envoy for their highly constructive approach to the talks today. These talks are gaining momentum and now even the unlikely is possible.”
Talking to reporters on the sideline of the talks, Baqaei said Iran was ready to continue negotiations “with full seriousness and in good faith” in order to have the sanctions on Iran lifted.
The talks are being held after President Trump wrote to Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei requesting negotiations be opened into a deal between Tehran and Washington.
