Muscat – The Consumer Protection Authority (CPA) seized more than 115,000 violating products across various sectors in 2024, with expired goods, banned items, and illicit tobacco products among the most prominent.

According to the CPA, expired products accounted for over 41,000 seized items, with Dhofar Governorate registering the highest proportion at 48%. Additionally, more than 16,000 banned products were confiscated, with Dhofar again topping the list at 66%.

In the fight against illegal tobacco products, authorities seized more than 15,000 items of chewing and smokeless tobacco, with Muscat Governorate leading at 43%. Meanwhile, over 10,000 items of clothing and products violating public decency were seized, with North Sharqiyah recording the highest percentage at 52%. Furthermore, the circulation of electronic cigarettes and shisha was prohibited, with more than 7,000 products confiscated, of which Muscat accounted for 99%.

Overall, the total number of seized products declined by 18% compared to 2023. The most significant reductions were recorded in the standards and measurements sector (95% decrease), the chewing and smokeless tobacco sector (48% decrease), and the counterfeit and imitation sector (49% decrease). Authorities attribute this improvement to increased supplier awareness and adherence to regulatory laws designed to protect consumer rights.

The CPA reaffirmed its commitment to rigorous market inspections and enforcement measures to ensure a safe marketplace for consumers. The Authority also urged the public to report any market violations through its official communication channels.
