Masirah Island – Masirah Island is set to be connected to Oman’s main electricity transmission network for the first time, following the laying of the foundation stone for a groundbreaking project led by the Oman Electricity Transmission Company (OETC). The initiative, valued at Ro 72 million, aims to boost energy capacity, reduce carbon emissions, and pave the way for future renewable energy projects.
H E Eng. Salim al Awfi, Minister of Energy and Minerals, who presided over the ceremony, highlighted the significance of the 94-kilometre transmission network. He stated that the project, expected to be completed within 24 months, will eliminate reliance on diesel, reducing carbon emissions by 80,000 tonnes annually and opening new opportunities for industry and investment on the island.
OETC CEO Eng. Saleh bin Nasser al Rumhi, emphasised the company’s commitment to enhancing efficiency and aligning with global standards, ensuring sustainable energy solutions for Oman’s future. The project will include a 132/33 kV power station on Masirah Island, a 25-kilometre submarine cable, 9 kilometres of underground lines, and 60 kilometres of overhead transmission lines connecting the 400/132 kV Mahout station to Masirah.
Sheikh Abdullah bin Khalifa al Majali of Masirah Island hailed the project as a game-changer for tourism and business, expressing the community’s enthusiasm for the economic growth it promises. The initiative is a key step in Oman’s energy transformation strategy, supporting the nation’s drive towards net zero emissions by 2050 by integrating cleaner and more efficient energy sources.
