Prayagraj, India – A devastating stampede at the ‘Maha Kumbh Festival’ in Prayagraj has resulted in multiple fatalities and numerous injuries as tens of thousands of pilgrims gathered for a ritual bath in the sacred rivers.

The exact number of casualties remains unclear, with reports indicating at least 15 deaths, while others suggest the toll could be higher. The tragedy unfolded at around 4 a.m. IST on Wednesday during ‘Mauni Amavasya’, the most auspicious bathing day of the festival.

Authorities are investigating the cause of the surge, which occurred as crowds thronged the confluence of the Ganges, Yamuna, and the mythical Saraswati rivers. Videos circulating online depict distressing scenes of scattered belongings and grieving family members outside makeshift hospitals.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath have been briefed on the situation, with the latter urging attendees to follow safety guidelines. Bathing at the site has been temporarily suspended.

The Maha Kumbh Mela, held once every 12 years, is the world’s largest religious gathering, with over 400 million visitors expected during its duration from January 13 to February 26. This year’s event holds particular significance due to a rare planetary alignment occurring for the first time in 144 years.

Emergency response teams are continuing rescue efforts, while authorities have assured stricter crowd control measures in the coming days to prevent further incidents.
