Muscat – Oman recorded over 3.5mn visitors in 2024 between January and November, matching figures from the same period in 2023. The total number of visitors in 2023 was 4mn.

The hospitality sector saw a marked improvement, with 1.929mn guests staying in 3- to 5-star hotels during the same 11-month period – a 4% increase from 2023. Hotel revenues rose to RO212.372mn, representing a 5% increase compared to the previous year. Hotel occupancy rates also climbed to 48.6%, a 1.5% increase, reflecting growing demand for high-quality accommodation.

H E Salim al Mahrouqi, Minister of Heritage and Tourism, highlighted Oman’s tourism recovery and its ambitious targets at an international media forum – ‘Oman and the World’ – held in Muscat earlier this month. “Oman’s stunning beaches, ports, unique topography and adventure tourism opportunities have significantly boosted tourist numbers.”

The ministry aims to attract 6mn tourists annually by 2030, a goal it hopes to meet ahead of target. Efforts to reach this number include promoting adventure, marine and culinary tourism, as well as showcasing Unesco-listed archaeological sites. Promotional campaigns have been launched in Europe and Russia, alongside the opening of tourism offices in key markets. Expanding into East Asia is now a priority.

A major challenge to meeting the target is limited direct flight connectivity, which the ministry is actively addressing to ensure smooth access for international tourists.

Oman’s cultural and natural heritage continues to captivate visitors. Dhofar, in particular, remains a major draw. Sites within the Land of Frankincense – such as Al Baleed, Samharam Archaeological Parks, Wadi Dawkah Nature Reserve and the Wabar Archaeological Site – welcomed 155,795 visitors in 2024.

With diverse attractions and ongoing efforts to overcome challenges, Oman is positioning itself as a leading global destination for travellers seeking rich cultural experiences and natural beauty.
