Muscat – The Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Water Resources (MAFWR) has launched a new initiative in Jabal Akhdar, focused on cultivating blueberries to diversify Oman’s agricultural sector.
This pioneering project leverages the region’s cold, mountainous climate to grow high-value crops.
Eng Mohammed al Khattab al Hinai, the owner of the experimental farm, stated that the project covers 1,000sqm and involves 500 Southern Highbush blueberry seedlings imported from Georgia. “This is the first experimental blueberry farm in Jabal Akhdar, and it is closely supervised by the Department of Agricultural Wealth and Water Resources,” he said.
Blueberries thrive in cooler climates and require between 200 and 400 hours of temperatures below 7°C. Jabal Akhdar’s climate is ideal, with a growing season that extends from May to late June.
The blueberries are cultivated using two methods: Air pots and direct ground planting, both with specially prepared acidic soil. Regular soil testing ensures optimal conditions, with a pH level maintained between 4.5 and 5.5.
The project prioritises sustainable farming practices. Modern irrigation systems will be used to conserve water, including seasonal distillation techniques, agriculturists said, adding that organic liquid fertilisers will be applied, and the plants will undergo annual pruning for the maintenance of their health.
“The soil will be covered with shredded pine wood, to help prevention of weed growth. This technique also reduces water evaporation, and enriches the soil through natural decomposition.”
This initiative aims to diversify the local agricultural production while promoting sustainable practices. “The unique climate of Jabal Akhdar provides an opportunity to grow high-value crops like blueberries, benefiting both the local community and the agricultural sector,” Hinai explained.
In addition to boosting agricultural sustainability, the project offers visitors and residents a chance to learn about blueberry cultivation, from planting to harvest. It highlights Oman’s efforts to explore innovative farming methods and utilise its distinctive environment to strengthen the agricultural industry. By focusing on high-value crops suited to its natural climate, Oman aims to enhance food security, support local farmers, and contribute to the long-term sustainability of its agricultural sector.
