12 Jan 2025 Oman celebrates Renewed Renaissance By OUR CORRESPONDENT

Muscat – Oman celebrated the fifth anniversary of His Majesty Sultan Haitham bin Tarik’s ascension to the throne with a series of transformative initiatives and commemorative events. These reflect His Majesty’s commitment to enhancing the welfare of Omani citizens and honouring the sultanate’s cultural and historical legacy while charting a course for the nation’s future development.

Royal welfare grant

On this historic occasion, Diwan of Royal Court announced a Royal grant exceeding RO178mn benefiting over 100,000 Omanis. The grant addresses key areas of social and economic welfare, including housing assistance, small and medium enterprise development, loan waiver and social protection.

Pension of less than RO350 for retirees will be supplemented and marriage funds will be established in every governorate providing financial assistance to citizens wishing to marry.

November 20 National Day

In his Royal speech marking the anniversary, His Majesty reflected on Oman’s proud history under the Al Busaidi family since 1744. He announced November 20 would be celebrated annually as Oman’s National Day, commemorating the day Sayyid Ahmed bin Said al Busaidi unified Oman, ensuring its sovereignty and dignity.

“On this occasion, we honour our ancestors and commemorate a glorious day in Oman’s history,” His Majesty stated, paying tribute to the founding leaders and their contributions.

Connecting the past with the present

In a move linking Oman’s modern development to its historical roots, His Majesty issued directives to rename key roads after prominent figures from the nation’s past. The Nizwa-Salalah route is now called Sultan Said bin Taimour Road and the Muscat-Al Batinah Road has been renamed Sultan Qaboos Road.

Student festival

The anniversary culminated in a grand student festival themed ‘Oman’s Renewed Renaissance’ at Al Fateh Square in Muscat. The event, attended by dignitaries, members of the Royal Family and thousands of citizens, was a vibrant display of national pride and cultural heritage.

The festival featured tableaus celebrating Oman’s progress under His Majesty the Sultan’s leadership, including themes of education, innovation and peaceful governance. The highlight was a tribute to His Majesty, with citizens pledging their allegiance and expressing gratitude for his guidance.

As Oman continues to honour its rich history, the country looks ahead with optimism under His Majesty’s leadership. His initiatives and reforms demonstrate a focus on economic resilience, social welfare and cultural preservation, ensuring that the Renewed Renaissance lays a strong foundation for the nation’s future.
