118 riders participate in Saham equestrian festival

Muscat – Oman Equestrian and Racing Federation, in cooperation with Saham Wali’s Office, organised a traditional horse festival in Saham, North Batinah on Friday.

The event was held under the patronage of  Sheikh Sebaa Hamdan al Saadi, Secretary-General of Secretariat General of National Celebrations.

Sheikh Dr Sultan bin Abdullah al Battashi, Wali, emphasised that hosting the traditional horse festival in Saham is in line with the wilayat’s efforts to promote cultural and heritage tourism, enhance social cohesion and improve the economy. He noted the festival’s role in preserving the cultural heritage associated with horses and underscored the historical value of horses in strengthening national identity.

The wali pointed out that the festival attracts tourists and stimulates the local tourism industry, while providing an opportunity to showcase the skills of participating riders.

According to Dr Abdulaziz bin Saud al Maamari, Chairman of Saham Equestrian Committee, which organised the festival, a total of 118 male and female riders from various governorates participated this year. He highlighted that this strong turnout reflects the growing interest in equestrian activities.

The festival featured a variety of segments, combining traditional horse sports and displays of horse-related performances. Among the activities were artistic performances on horseback, Royal Navy of Oman’s music band and several folk groups.

Other highlights included a pony race for children, horse shows and equestrian skills demonstrations.
