Muscat – South Batinah has unveiled a comprehensive development strategy in alignment with Oman Vision 2040 designed to enhance economic growth and quality of life. Drawn up with inputs from government and private sector stakeholders, the plan rests on three strategic pillars: communication, excellence and diversity.
According to Governor Masoud bin Saeed al Hashmi, the aim is to position South Batinah as a regional leader in data centres and e-commerce, establish a robust logistics zone, and develop advanced infrastructure within the logistics sector.
A significant component of the plan is development of South Batinah as the national centre for sports excellence. “We are committed to providing a wide range of sports services and hosting global sporting events,” Hashmi stated. These efforts are designed to make the governorate a preferred destination for both tourism and entertainment, thereby boosting the local economy and enhancing social engagement.
The agricultural and fisheries sectors are also high on the governorate’s agenda. Investment in Barka and Musannah ports will support projected growth. Barka Port is expected to see an investment of RO50mn. Additionally, artisanal fishing, supporting over 3,000 local fishermen, is a crucial sector with ongoing infrastructure upgrades aimed at enhancing economic sustainability and job creation.
To boost tourism, restoration projects are underway at Rustaq Fort and Imam Ahmed bin Saeed Mosque. South Batinah’s diverse landscapes – coastal areas, mountains and springs – and historical sites position it as a primary tourism destination. The governorate is encouraging private sector involvement to develop integrated resorts, visitor centres and basic infrastructure.
Healthcare services are receiving attention with upgrades planned for Wadi Bani Ghafir Hospital and health complexes in Barka and Nakhal. Collaborative efforts with the Ministry of Health include community awareness campaigns, improved healthcare facilities and ongoing expansion to cater to the governorate’s growing needs. Additionally, plans to enhance water networks in Rustaq and Barka are underway aiming to ensure reliable and sustainable water services.
Environmental conservation remains integral to the efforts, particularly within Rustaq Wildlife Reserve and the Daymaniyat Islands Nature Reserve. The governorate’s focus includes balancing development with environmental preservation by working with Environment Authority to monitor and protect local biodiversity. The Al Alalan Park project in Jebel Shams highlights efforts to raise environmental awareness and enhance eco-tourism.
In education, South Batinah is improving infrastructure by building new schools in Barka and Al Awabi, and enhancing vocational and digital skills.
Upcoming projects include markets in Wadi al Maawil and Al Awabi, road improvement works, and development along seafronts in Barka and Musannah. The governorate is also addressing repair needs following recent climate-related damage in Rustaq, Al Awabi and Nakhal.
To facilitate entrepreneurship, the Authority for Small and Medium Enterprises Development has launched initiatives to support small businesses and startups.
