Muscat – Yacht tourism in Muscat governorate is experiencing a significant growth, with approximately 500 registered tourist yachts now operating in the capital.
This increase was highlighted by Captain Majid bin Saif al Barhi, Director General of Maritime Affairs at the Ministry of Transport, Communications and Information Technology.
Barhi informed that yacht tourism is a vital component that enhances marine tourism in the sultanate. He noted its importance in developing the tourism sector, as it attracts visitors seeking exceptional experiences.
“Tourists are drawn to explore the rich marine life along Oman’s coasts, including renowned destinations such as the Dimaniyat Islands, the Bandar al Khiran area, and other popular sites.”
He pointed out that Muscat governorate’s pristine beaches and well-equipped marinas contribute to the surge in yacht tourism. Currently, there are six marinas in operation, with plans for additional modern facilities on the horizon.
Captain Barhi added that the ministry actively monitors yacht trips to ensure user safety, particularly during peak seasons. Future plans include developing the sector by integrating clean energy technologies for tourist yachts and enhancing beach facilities to better cater to tourists. This includes studying projects to implement renewable energy solutions, such as solar panels, on yachts.
Mohammed bin Ahmed, owner of a tourist yacht, remarked on the recent increase in marine tourism, highlighting the breathtaking natural beauty of Oman. He credited the government’s commitment to improving marine infrastructure, which facilitates yacht tourism, as well as the availability of modern marinas equipped with fuel supply and maintenance services.
He added that these trips feature a variety of events and activities, including diving, which offers a unique opportunity to observe marine wildlife, such as dolphins.
