Muscat – Environment Authority (EA) has issued a warning against tampering with camera traps and devices used for research and field studies.
In a statement, EA said camera traps are being installed across various locations in the country to support national environmental projects and research. The authority urged the public not to interfere with these devices, noting that violations will result in legal consequences.
EA has successfully deployed camera traps in different regions of Oman, capturing images of rare wildlife such as Arabian leopard, Arabian deer, red foxes and ibex, besides reptiles and birds. These hidden cameras, equipped with smart sensors, are strategically placed in rugged terrains and wadis to monitor animal movement during the night. The collected data is crucial for wildlife management and conservation efforts.
An EA official explained that images from these cameras are retrieved, sorted and analysed based on their location. This data is then compiled and added to EA’s database, forming the basis for projects and plans aimed at protecting wildlife in the sultanate.
