Muscat – Abdullah bin Khamis al Farsi and his brother Mohammed have done Oman proud by winning two medals at the AJP Tour Dubai International Jiu-Jitsu Championship held from August 30 to September 1.
Their achievements are a significant milestone, especially following the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Youth’s decision in July this year to establish a dedicated sports committee for martial arts and self defence sports.
Speaking to Muscat Daily from Dubai, the brothers shared their excitement and pride. Abdullah won the bronze medal in the black belt under 62kg category, while Mohammed claimed the gold in the violet belt under 69kg category. The championship was fiercely contested with 3,000 participants from around the world, including China, Japan, Russia, Germany, France, Britain, Italy, Spain, Brazil, Argentina and the GCC countries.
The team representing Oman fielded six jujitsukas – Akram al Arimi, Faisal al Balushi, Talal al Balushi and Musab al Farqani, besides Abdullah and Mohammed.
Abdullah described their journey to the finals as one requiring immense concentration and unwavering determination. To prepare for the championship, the brothers underwent rigorous training, dedicating five hours every day to hone their skills.
They expressed a strong desire to continue representing Oman in international tournaments and taking the Omani flag to global arenas.
Regarding the dedicated committee for martial arts and self defence sports, Abdullah said it aims to develop and support athletes for national and international competitions.
Abdullah added that their success brings with it great responsibility, including training young talent, organising workshops and promoting jiu-jitsu throughout the sultanate. He encouraged Omani youth to take up the sport and stated his belief in their potential to achieve greatness.
