Muscat – Omani documentary film Sand Girl, directed by Salah al Hadhrami, was recently feted at the Roshani International Film Festival in India, winning awards for Best Actress and Best Screenplay.
Speaking to Muscat Daily, Hadhrami said, “A ten-minute film, Sand Girl tells the story of a woman living in Sharqiyah Sands who, despite her modest means, generously hosts and honours her guests. It portrays the traditional Omani and Arab custom of hospitality, regardless of the guest’s nationality.”
The awards at the Roshani International Film Festival follows several others at various festivals this year. It won Best Direction at Oman Desert International Film Festival, Jury Award at the 11th Muscat International Film Festival, and Best Documentary Film at Digital Gate International Film Festival in Algeria in May 2024.
Emphasising the importance of film festivals, Hadhrami noted that these facilitate the exchange of cinematic experiences and stimulate healthy competition. “These opportunities drive filmmakers to refine their skills and explore diverse cinematic cultures.”
He also highlighted the role of workshops and exhibitions at these festivals, which provide crucial platforms for filmmakers to collaborate and advance their craft.
Reflecting on the success of Omani films, Hadhrami said, “The awards for Sand Girl underscores the significant strides Omani cinema is making on the international stage. It showcases the commitment of Omani directors to use films to celebrate and promote Oman’s rich traditions and customs.”
Sand Girl will also participated in the Lebanese Independent Film Festival and Atlas International Film Festival in Morocco in the coming months. “Participating in festivals and engaging with international audiences are essential for advancing Omani culture and enhancing the global profile of Omani cinema,” Hadhrami added.
