Friday-Saturday vs Saturday-Sunday weekends

28 Jul 2024 Friday-Saturday VS Saturday-Sunday weekends By

Muscat – Oman has always struck a balance between tradition and modernity in professional and family life. In recent times, a debate has emerged over the Friday-Saturday weekend. Should Oman shift to a Saturday-Sunday weekend, like the UAE has done and in alignment with the business schedule of most other countries? Here is what Muscat Daily readers said –

Ahmed Mahmoud, IT professional

Shifting to a Saturday-Sunday weekend could enhance Oman’s global business alignment, making it easier for companies to engage with international partners. This change could increase economic opportunities and foster stronger global relations, benefiting the nation’s economy.

Mohammad al Abri, Businessman

I do not agree with changing the weekend. Maintaining a Friday-Saturday weekend respects cultural and religious traditions, preserving Oman’s unique identity. This schedule allows citizens to observe Friday prayers and maintain a balanced work-life harmony rooted in local customs.

Sanjay Kumar, Chartered accountant

This is a tricky question. Changing the weekend may face resistance from those accustomed to the current schedule. It’s crucial to consider the potential impact on local businesses, education and community life, ensuring any change is carefully managed to minimise disruption. However, the Sunday off will benefit in the long term.

Nabeel al Balushi, Travel consultant

A Saturday-Sunday weekend could improve tourism by aligning with global travel patterns, making Oman more accessible to international tourists. This shift might boost the hospitality sector and contribute to economic diversification.

Amr A Baabood, Group CEO, OITE Group

Of course, Oman should have implemented the standard Saturday-Sunday weekend decades ago, but better late than never. We all know the logic of implementing the standard weekend; we just need to make the decision and join the rest of the world.  Aligning with the global business week improves trade and economic activities, as businesses and financial markets in Oman would operate on the same schedule as all other economies. Employees benefit from having weekends that align with international partners, leading to better communication and fewer delays in multinational projects. It will boost tourism, as it would be easier for international tourists to plan their trips. Students in Oman would have the same weekend as many international schools, which could be advantageous for academic collaborations and exchange programmes. Families with members working or studying abroad could find it easier to stay in touch and visit, as their weekends would align. There are plenty more significant economic, social and operational benefits for advancing in this way. There are no benefits/advantages with the current format.

Syed Mujtaba Ahmad, Businessman

Oman should not change weekends as the UAE is not a role model for everything. Friday is a holy day for Muslims, and Oman is a Muslim country that follows traditions. So, BIG NO to Saturday-Sunday weekends.

Madiha Mazhar, Housewife

I think Oman should keep the Friday-Saturday weekend. Being an Islamic country, Oman should profess the amalgamation of both Islamic and the worldly ways. Oman is cherished for its landscape, nature, culture and traditional values. Why become the usual when Oman is special?

Muhammad Toseef, Civil engineer

I would strongly appreciate a Saturday-Sunday weekend if implemented.

Basith, Engineer

I would support a shift to a Saturday-Sunday weekend. Since UAE changed its weekend, we are left with only four days to do business with companies in UAE.  It’s the same scenario when we connect with Europe, US, China, India etc.
