Muscat – Sports Spark – a bouquet of sporting events aimed at popularising the concept of health and physical fitness among the city-dwellers – has been launched at the Oman Convention and Exhibition Centre (OCEC) on Wednesday.

The event – being held in collaboration with Muscat Governorate and Sabco Sports to encourage physical activities during the harsh summer months – will run till August 24, the organisers said at a press conference on Wednesday.

“We are thrilled to host such a fantastic event at the OCEC, underscoring our dedication to enhancing the quality of life for our residents,” said Said al Shanfari, CEO of the OCEC, while addressing the media at the venue.

The convention centre CEO affirmed that the event “perfectly aligns with our mission to promote a healthy and active lifestyle in a secure environment, offering a diverse array of indoor sports and fitness options that keeps the community engaged, energised, and healthy”.

Sports Spark will feature special activities for various groups. Corporate team-building games and professional coaching sessions will also be held to enhance teamwork and morale among employees.

Many of these activities, Shanfari said, are free to access, “including our fitness corner and running track”, so as to make sure that everyone can benefit from them.

To add more spark to the event, organisers said, two women-only days – August 3 and 17 – have been planned, with the potential for more based on demand. The Summer Camp for children – aged 6 to 14 – will run everyday from 9am to 2pm, blending fun with educational experiences, they added.

“I look forward to seeing everyone explore our facilities and register on our website to book their next fitness or sports session,” Shanfari said, adding that the facilities will remain open to the public from 3pm to 12am, “offering a cool and comfortable environment for everyone”.

This setup also provides a unique opportunity to meet reputed players and coaches, fostering pathways for aspiring sports professionals, he informed, while assuring the participants that they will have access to state-of-the-art facilities and professional coaching, catering to different skill levels.

The OCEC chief also took the opportunity to express gratefulness to Muscat Governorate; the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Youth; Omran Group and Sabco Sport, for their support.

Sports Spark will feature a diverse range of indoor sports, including football, badminton, basketball, table tennis, volleyball, and even ninja training. All events will be held inside the exhibition halls of OCEC.

The organisers said that interested individuals can register online at https://sportsparkoman.com/en/book-your-sport

OCEC plans to expand Sports Spark into an annual event with new training programmes added.
