Muscat – Osool Poultry has signed an agreement with Aviagen – a global leader in the poultry industry headquartered in the USA – to set up a poultry breeding project with an investment totalling RO10mn.
Aviagen will provide comprehensive technical support for project management under the terms of the agreement.
The primary goal of establishing the project is to strengthen food security and achieve self-sufficiency in white meat in the sultanate. The project aims to eventually meet the entire domestic demand for chickens, thereby reducing dependence on imports.
The agreement was formalised by Dr Hadi al Lawati, CEO of Osool Poultry, and Bulent Tanyildizi, Business Manager for Aviagen, MENA.
The project is of critical importance to the poultry industry, facilitating the production of fertilised eggs and high-quality chicks for supply to other farms and poultry ventures.
Additionally, the project aims to mitigate risks associated with poultry imports, including transmission of pathogens to Oman, and address logistical challenges such as transportation.
Osool Poultry currently produces 150mn hatching eggs annually. The Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Water Resources is poised to play a pivotal role in the new project. This includes transferring global knowledge and expertise, introducing the latest technologies and practices in breeder poultry projects, and enhancing the training and qualification of Omani national cadres to boost sector competitiveness.
