Muscat – Muttrah, the landmark tourist attraction in Muscat, will soon undergo major transformation with the addition of an iconic Muttrah Square Project, a multi-storey car parking and several cafés around the neighbourhood.

The Municipal Council of Muscat on Monday held its fifth meeting of the year, chaired by Sayyid Saud bin Hilal al Busaidi, Governor of Muscat, in the presence of Ahmed al Humaidi, Chairman of Muscat Municipality.

On the sidelines of the meeting, Humaidi said, “The municipality is finalising detailed maps for the development of Muttrah, which includes the enhancement of corniche and the establishment of cafés and restaurants in the residential neighbourhoods.”

Additionally, the municipality will commence the implementation of the Muttrah Square Project during the third quarter of this year, he informed. “A tender has also been issued for the construction of a multi-storey car park in Muttrah to alleviate traffic congestion.”

Muttrah Square Project involves construction of an iconic bridge in the shape of an arch looming over the middle of the square by the sea, which had won the first edition of the Bilarab bin Haitham Award for Architectural Design.

Inspired by the sword of Imam al Salt bin Malik al Kharusi, the iconic structure will offer a view of all the famous landmarks of Muttrah. The arched bridge will have a mixed-use plaza, a dancing fountain, retail stores and cafés.

During the meeting, the council reviewed the Omran Group’s statement regarding the Sultan Qaboos Port waterfront development project. Omran is leading the redevelopment of the area, projected to be crucial in transforming Muttrah into a premier tourist destination with the highest international standards.

The national project aligns with Oman Vision 2040 and the National Tourism Strategy that seek to enhance efforts to create unique tourist destinations and experiences.

The multi-use tourism project will adhere to considerations set by the Oman Investment Authority, ensuring it adds value without disrupting the port’s location, historical, and architectural heritage.
