Tribute to ‘golden era’ of Indian football

A popular theme among movie lovers have been war in sports fields. It stands as a proof of the underdogs determination to win over the priviledged. Raning from Escape to Victory to very own desi Lagaan, Mary Kom, 83, Dhangal, Chak De India, Bhaag Milkha Bhaag, the latest addition to the list that stands testimony to the sportman spirit is Maidaan.

Maidaan, the latest release starring Ajay Devgn and Priyamani, is a stirring tribute to India’s football legacy and the remarkable coach, Syed Abdul Rahim. Set against the backdrop of post-independence India, the film chronicles Rahim’s unwavering determination to elevate Indian football to global prominence. Inspired by true events, Maidaan sheds light on a forgotten chapter in Indian sports history, when football was a beacon of hope for the nation’s youth.

While the film’s runtime of 181 minutes feels excessive, Maidaan manages to deliver an inspirational narrative despite its flaws. The soccer matches are electrifying, capturing the essence of the sport and Rahim’s coaching prowess. However, the film occasionally gets bogged down by unnecessary melodrama that detracts from the main storyline.

As a sports biopic, Maidaan successfully celebrates the golden era of Indian football and the pivotal role played by Syed Abdul Rahim. Through meticulous attention to detail, the film recreates the highs and lows of Rahim’s coaching journey, from the devastating defeat at the 1952 Olympics to the triumphs of the 1962 Asian Games. The impressive sports choreography, reminiscent of Chak De! India and  ’83 adds authenticity to the on-field action.

Despite its strengths, Maidaan falls short due to its indulgent storytelling. The film’s self-importance and penchant for unnecessary dramatization detract from its overall impact. Nevertheless, Maidaan remains a compelling cinematic experience that highlights the power of sports to inspire and unite a nation.

The 181-minute ride is so full of sometimes standard cliches and dramatisations; however the camera and background score with the emotions touched the audience.
