Ramadan inspires community spirit, volunteerism

2 Apr 2024 Ramadan inspires community spirit, volunteerism in Oman By MOHAMMED TAHA

Muscat – Volunteering is a meaningful way to contribute to society, but it takes on a more profound meaning during Ramadan, the month of giving and charity.

Jihad Khalid al Farsi, the 27-year-old leader of Basmatna Ghair Team in Quriyat, shared with Muscat Daily the importance of voluntary efforts during Ramadan. “This time offers an opportunity for social contribution and reinforcing community bonds,” Farsi said.

His team is active in campaigns aimed at raising awareness on reducing food wastage, managing surplus food and ensuring it reaches those in need. It also distributes seedlings across Muscat governorate advocating  the expansion of green spaces.

Farsi’s team is dedicated to promoting environmental consciousness, urging the youth of Oman to engage in initiatives that address ecological issues, champion recycling and minimise unnecessary consumption. “I urge Omani youth to actively participate in volunteer work, fostering a more compassionate and united society,” he added.

Adel al Ghailani, leader of Sur Volunteer Team, highlighted the enriching experience of volunteering, noting its impact on personal well-being and satisfaction, and the sense of belonging in communities. He views volunteer work as a means for youth to hone their skills and invest their leisure time in contributing positively to their community.

Emphasising Ramadan’s significance as an opportune time for Muslims to take part in voluntary activities, thus fulfilling the needs of the faithful and enhancing social cohesion, Ali Mohammed al Amri informed that Shinas Charity Team, which he leads, focuses on distributing iftar meals among Omanis and non-Omanis alike and supports orphaned children.

Fawzi Abu Hadid, imam of a mosque in Muscat, underlined the importance of voluntarism during Ramadan, citing it as an ideal time for charitable acts. Referring to the teachings of Prophet Mohammad (PBUH), he said, “Ramadan is a sacred period when the doors of Paradise are opened, the gates of Hell are closed, and devils are chained, creating a conducive environment for good deeds and volunteering.”

He also emphasised the value of sincerity in these efforts, advising individuals to seek fulfillment in divine satisfaction over worldly recognition or praise. “The motivation should be for spiritual reward rather than worldly gains.”

These efforts and initiatives highlight the impact of volunteer work during Ramadan, not only in meeting immediate community needs but also in fostering a deeper sense of unity, personal growth and environmental responsibility.
