Sur – The Maritime Heritage Village has become the star attraction at the ongoing Sur Maritime Heritage Festival held to celebrate Sur’s recognition as Arab Tourism Capital 2024.
Nestled on the scenic shores of Khor al Batah in Al Ayjah, the village offers a unique glimpse into the rich maritime history of South Sharqiyah.
An official of Ministry of Heritage and Tourism described the village as a journey through time, emphasising the deep-rooted connection between the people of Sur and the sea. “This village is more than just a tourist attraction; it’s a testament to the enduring legacy of Sur’s inhabitants and their centuries-old maritime heritage,” the official stated.
Dedicated to the preservation of Oman’s seafaring heritage, the village showcases traditional craftsmanship and Sur’s historical importance as a pivotal trading and maritime centre.
Visitors are treated to an immersive experience that recreates the bustling life of ancient Omani ports, complete with enactments of activities like loading goods – dates, fish and dried lemons – alongside renditions of songs that sailors sang as they set off on voyages across the Arabian Gulf to ports in Iraq, Iran, East Africa and India.
The village also has a remarkable collection of artefacts, offering insights into the traditional tools and techniques used in fishing.
Heritage enthusiasts and experts share their knowledge with visitors, bringing to life stories and practices of Oman’s maritime past. The village has become a hub for collectors and aficionados of maritime heritage, promoting the exchange of traditional maritime arts and crafts.
