Muscat – The annual international conference of GSM Association’s Fraud and Security Group started in Muscat on Tuesday, hosted by Omantel. The three-day conference has drawn over 150 experts and specialists to discuss critical issues surrounding mobile phone fraud and various security threats in the realm of information and digital technology.

This year’s conference is focusing on the challenges and developments in the field of IT fraud and security, particularly concerning mobile phones. The event features presentations and discussions aimed at keeping attendees abreast of evolving threats, regulatory changes and technological advancements in mobile fraud and security. It also provides a platform for sharing emerging trends, best practices and effective solutions to combat threats.

Abdullah bin Hamoud al Barwani, Director General of Information and Communications Security at Omantel, stressed on the conference’s role in enhancing global cooperation among regulatory bodies, operators and the information security industry. He described the event as crucial for exchanging experiences and staying updated in the rapidly evolving field of cybersecurity and fraud prevention.

The conference will showcase 50 working papers, facilitating local and international exchange of knowledge and insights into new developments in cybersecurity and fraud mitigation. The outcomes of these discussions are expected to be pivotal for future strategies and practices in the field.

Barwani also spoke of Omantel’s significant contribution in drafting regulations related to fraud protection and cybersecurity risks, in line with guidelines issued by GSMA. “Hosting the conference underlines Omantel’s active role and keen interest in the association’s activities.”

Jawad Abbasi, head of MENA at GSMA, highlighted the conference’s importance in fostering cooperation between telecommunications companies, governments and legislators. “This collaborative effort is crucial for combating fraud and cyberattacks on mobile networks and the Internet.”

Abbasi pointed out that the conference is instrumental in building confidence in the mobile communications sector, the Internet and cybersecurity across various economies and societies. “It serves as a vital exchange hub for experiences and knowledge about threats facing the industry, thus contributing significantly to the global fight against mobile fraud and enhancing cybersecurity.”
