Muscat – H H Sayyid Theyazin bin Haitham bin Tarik al Said, Minister of Culture, Sports and Youth, hosted a commendation ceremony in his office on Wednesday to honour the extraordinary achievements of the national Paralympic team and its coaches.

A statement issued by H H Sayyid Theyazin said, ‘The accolades were for their outstanding performance at the Asian Para Games held in China in October 2023, where they won a remarkable collection of gold and silver medals.’

Oman para athletes had remarkable success at the fourth edition of the Asian Para Games held in Hangzhou, China. The event saw participation of over 5,000 athletes from 44 countries. The Omani contingent claimed a total of four medals, including two gold medals won by star athlete Mohammed al Mashaikhi in shot put and javelin throw. His outstanding performance in shot put also earned him a slot in the 2024 Paris Olympic Games in France.

Mohammed al Qassmi, who contributed to Oman’s success with two well-deserved silver medals in shot put and javelin throw, was also feted at the ceremony.

Additionally, H H Sayyid Theyazin hosted international rally driver Abdullah bin Sulaiman al Rawahi who was honoured for his exceptional victory at the prestigious 2023 Middle East Rally Championship, a feat shared with Qatari World Rally Champion Nasser al Attiyah.
