Muscat – In a unique celebration of Oman’s 53rd National Day, a group of hikers embarked on a remarkable 100km journey from Nizwa to Samail.

Comprising 100 members, the ‘Al Burj Hiking’ group is dedicated to enhancing domestic tourism through hiking and camping. On Friday (November 17), they began a free hike at 6am and concluded at 9am on Saturday in Samail.

Hiker Yaqoub al Musalami of the group said that the 100km hike started from the wilayat of Nizwa and ended at Samail castle, passing through various villages of Dakhliyah. “The hike began with the slogan ‘Beautiful days in the history of Oman’.”

He emphasised the group’s intent to “promote the culture of physical fitness among people”.

Musalami, a hiking enthusiast who guides groups every weekend in different trails, noted that the participants were simply normal and ordinary people from different backgrounds, who “gathered here for the love of nature”.

The hike was also a patriotic act, with participants singing songs expressing their love for the sultanate. “We wanted to celebrate Oman’s National Day in our own way as hikers. Dakhliyah is an incredible place for hiking,” Musalami added.

The hikers carried Omani flags and portraits of His Majesty Sultan Haitham bin Tarik, enjoying pleasant weather and scenic views. The group, which varies in size but definitely includes at least ten regular hikers, chose this particular hike to make November 18 a special day of celebration with nature.

Musalami described the group’s careful planning process, including advance scouting of locations and weather conditions, to determine the feasibility of each trip. “We are also careful when deciding how many people can be taken for a particular trip,” he said.

Looking ahead, Musalami revealed plans for a Gulf-wide trip from December 1 to 14, aiming to spread the culture of hiking and attract more adventurers to Oman. “We organise about 40 hikes every year,” Musalami concluded, inviting citizens and residents to join the group’s future activities.
