Muscat – Over 750,000 voters are set to elect members of Majlis A’Shura for its tenth term on Sunday. Experts expect good voter turnout, considering the significance of this pivotal democratic exercise, while urging citizens to vote wisely.

Speaking to Muscat Daily, academicians and citizens expressed enthusiasm about their participation in this national duty.

Dr Ahmed al Bulushi, Dean of College of Engineering at National University of Science and Technology, emphasised the importance of the elections. “The act of voting is a significant democratic exercise that aids national development and supports government decision-making. The individuals elected to the Majlis A’Shura should be well-suited for the crucial work ahead and fulfil the nation’s aspirations.”

He added that the upcoming term is critical due to the legislative projects slated for debate. “It’s crucial for citizens to elect members who fulfil our hopes and contribute constructively to Oman’s development. The efficiency of the shura is intrinsically connected to the qualifications of its elected members. Hence, I urge the electorate to make judicious choices, devoid of regional or tribal prejudices.”

Echoing Bulushi’s sentiments, Dr Ahmed Said al Jahwari, a legal consultant, commended the outgoing Majlis A’Shura members for their contributions to policy-making and developmental projects across the sultanate.

Elaborating on the significance of the elections for the tenth-term, Jahwari highlighted the role of the newly elected members in implementing Oman Vision 2040 – a national blueprint for comprehensive development and improving living standards.

“The government will submit various legislative proposals to the shura that span the economic, social, cultural and administrative spheres which will inevitably affect citizens, either directly or indirectly,” Jahwari added.

Underscoring the need for informed voting, he said, “It’s crucial to cast votes for candidates who possess diverse expertise – be it scientific, political or cultural – to aptly represent us and achieve our goals. The criterion for selection should be competence.”

Yahya al Hassani, a government employee, urged comprehensive participation in the elections. “I’ve reviewed the candidates’ manifestos and intend to vote for the most qualified,” he said, highlighting the fact that elected members must have extensive educational qualifications and cultural awareness.

However, challenges remain, particularly for female candidates. Intisar al Busaidy, a lecturer at the University of Technology and Applied Sciences in Muscat, expressed concern over social factors preventing women’s participation. She pointed out that tribal affiliations, limited resources and traditional values can pose barriers. “Society should actively support women in achieving effective representation in governance,” she said. “A diverse Majlis A’Shura makes for a more inclusive and representative decision-making body for the entire community.”
