Muscat – Muscat Municipality is ushering in a greener future for the governorate by opting for native trees in public spaces.

Recognising the inherent resilience of these local species, the municipality has chosen them for plantation in areas such as walkways, gardens, parks and on the roadsides.

These trees are especially suited to the region, known for their ability to withstand drought, high temperatures, and sporadic rainfall.

Part of the landscaping also involves removing harmful and invasive trees that threaten the country’s water resources and eliminate other alien species disrupting the local ecosystem.

The initiative is not just about planting; it is also about strategic removal of harmful and invasive trees that jeopardise the country’s water resources. In a nod to sustainable practices, removed trees are not just discarded they are turned as organic fertilisers.

‘By recycling tree residues, the municipality ensures that they are repurposed into environmentally friendly nourishment for other plants’, officials said.

‘This process integrates environmental preservation with sustainability,’ said municipality. ‘Our goal is to foster a city that is not only vibrant and green but also healthy, clean, and devoid of pollutants,’ it added.
