Muscat – To increase green cover across the sultanate, the Environment Authority (EA) launched a campaign to collect 60,000 mangrove seeds in Dhofar last week.
An EA official said, “The authority, represented by the Directorate General of Environment in Dhofar, is carrying out a campaign to collect mangrove seeds in order to bolster stocks in its nurseries.”
The official added that the campaign aims to provide the authority’s nurseries seeds of a diverse range of indigenous plants with the objective of increase the green cover in the governorate.
Concerted efforts to preserve environmental systems in accordance with internationally approved standards and measures will have a significant positive impact in creating a sound environmental balance, the EA official said, also emphasising the importance of community participation and solidarity in preserving these ecosystems.
In January 2020, EA in cooperation with Petroleum Development Oman, launched an initiative to plant 10mn wild tree saplings in ten years.
