Muscat – The Ministry of Heritage and Tourism (MHT) has started Phase 1 of a restoration and maintenance project of the Omani-French Museum in Muscat.
Prior to undertaking the restoration work, MHT conducted laboratory testing of the building and its structural strength. A work plan and scope of work was identified following the test results to ensure sustainability of the project.
A statement issued by MHT said, ‘This phase of work consists of removal of the external wall cladding following best international practices adopted in restoration of historical buildings.’
The museum, which was opened to visitors in 1992, is housed in a 170-year-old structure located in the Old Muscat neighbourhood of Muttrah. It has eight display halls showcasing a collection of documents and items chronicling Omani-French relations dating back to the 18th century.
MHT’s work plan for the project will ensure reuse of traditional and approved construction and restoration materials and methods in ancient buildings.
The restoration project is part of the ministry’s efforts to develop and rehabilitate existing museums to achieve Oman Vision 2040.
