Snowfall in Jabal Shams, hills experience sub-zero temperature

Muscat – With Jabal shams recording sub-zero temperatures in the past few days, the highest peak in the sultanate witnessed snowfall on Monday.

Speaking to Muscat Daily, Abdullah al Khatri, owner of Jabal Shams Moon guesthouse, informed that the area is experiencing freezing temperatures and hills were laden with snow on Monday.

According to the Directorate General of Meteorology, Jabel Shams recorded – 3.6 °C on Monday, the lowest temperature of the year so far, while the temperature was -2°C on Tuesday, 7am.

The directorate added that the lowest recorded temperature in Jabel Shams was -9.7°C in January 2015, since monitoring began in 2003.

Khatri added that Jabal Shams or the ‘Mountain of the Sun’ offers one of the most picturesque settings in Oman, especially during the winter season. It is also one of the most popular destinations for camping.

“Currently, the area is witnessing a large turnout of foreign tourists, residents and citizens alike.”
