Muscat – An obscure signboard in the parking lot next to Nesto hypermarket in Ruwi is leading to ‘unwanted’ fines for many commuters for parking their vehicles inadvertently in the zone meant for taxis.

The signboard, which states that the parking area is reserved for ‘small taxis’, has faded over the years and hence fails to draw the attention of the other car drivers visiting the area.

On most days there are ample parking space for general public, however on weekends and specially during special promotions at the hypermarket, there is a rush and that is when many people are fined for parking in the spot designated for taxis. An unauthorised parking attracts a fine of RO10 from the civic authorities.

Ashraf M Alam, a regular shopper at the hypermarket, said, “I have been a victim of thisproblem twice. I no more keep my car there. When there is no parking slot, I am okay with parking a little far; but in no way I shall endure fine. The sign has faded and very difficult to see.”

Another shopper – who wished not to be named – said, “It would help commuters if the signboard is a little more clear. Even the colour contrast is bad and can’t be read properly. I have seen such unclear signboards in several other areas such as Seeb, Mawaleh and Gubrah.”

He added that the authorities should take a serious note of the problem and make parking signs properly visible with bold fonts and bright colours.

Chaos is more during the days the hypermarket offers sales.
“Often parking signs are missed and the chances for this one to be missed is high due to its obscurity. As a result many vehicle owners fall victims to fines,” said another visitor.

An official from the hypermarket added, “Public parking signboards do not come under our ambit even though we have our staff to guide shoppers to designated parking. The best way to avoid fines is to use the parking facility of the hypermarket.”
