Muscat – The Oman Barcoding Centre has received membership of GS1 – a not-for-profit, international organisation developing and maintaining standards including barcodes – with country code 607 assigned to the sultanate.
Redha bin Juma al Saleh, chairman of Oman Chamber of Commerce and Industry, praised the establishment of the Oman Barcoding Centre and its obtaining membership of GS1. “This will increase the value of Omani products and product competitiveness.”
The establishment of the numbering system will help factories export their products efficiently. Most countries require a barcode for products to enter their markets, Saleh added.
He urged Omani businesses and SME owners to register their products and get the international barcode for these through the Oman Barcoding Centre in order to protect their products and their rights.
The Global Location Number (GLN) under GS1 is an identification key used for any location – physical, operational or legal – that needs to be identified for use in the supply chain.
GLNs are a key concept in electronic data interchange ensuring lean and efficient communication and processing since names, addresses and other information about particular locations do not need to be comm- unicated with every transaction.
