Muscat – The Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Water Resources (MAFWR) has urged fishermen who wish to live in the fishermen’s village on Masirah in South Sharqiyah governorate to register their names.
The initiative aims to provide housing and basic services to support fishermen and stimulate commercial movement.
A statement issued by MAFWR said, ‘The ministry announces that construction work in the fishermen’s village in the wilayat of Masirah will be completed soon. The ministry urges fishermen who wish to live in the village to register their names to benefit from the services that will be provided there.’
MAFWR has set certain conditions, including fishermen should be citizens, engaged in the profession full-time, not committed any violations during the past two years and be registered with the Social Security Authority. ‘The fisherman must be from outside Masirah and have a lease contract for a fishing boat,’ it added.
Registration opened on February 27 and will run for three weeks.
In September 2020, the ministry started the construction of the fishermen’s village in Masirah on an area of 4,537sqm.
MAFWR stated that the project aims to establish special villages for fishermen to enable jobseekers to work in the profession in fish-rich areas. It also aims to support the sector contribute more to the national economy.
