Two Arabs win 2019 Sultan Qaboos award

An Egyptian singer and an Iraqi travel literature writer will receive the 2019 Sultan Qaboos Award for Culture, Arts and Literature. 

Addressing a press conference on Wednesday, Habib bin Mohammed al Riyami, Secretary General of Sultan Qaboos Higher Centre for Culture and Science, said, “The Sultan Qaboos Award for Culture, Arts and Literature is an annual award that is alternatively given to Omanis and Arabs.” 

He added that this year three areas were included: studies of sociology, Arab music and travel literature. Riyami said that the award in sociology studies in culture section has been withheld while the award in the field of Arab music in arts section has been given to Egyptian singer Ali Ibrahim Ali al Haggar. In the field of travel literature in arts section, the award has been given to Iraq’s Basim Mohammed Furat, a resident of New Zealand. 

Riyami said that the number of Arab applicants who met the criteria reached 157 including 78 in sociology studies, 27 in Arab music and 52 in travel literature. Applications for the award were received from March 3 to August 15.
