Local Round-Up: Soomar, Qasimi target podium in UAE

Having finished runner-up in the second round of the UAE Rally Championship, Oman's Khalid Soomar and his co-driver Issa al Wardi, driving their Mitsubishi Evo 7, will look to make their presence felt in the third round of the championship, to be held in Ras al Khaimah on Saturday.

Oman's Hamid al Qasimi and his co-driver Mohamed al Mazroui, driving their Mitsubishi Evo 8, will also take part in the third-round action.

Both Soomar and Qasimi have a chance of finishing on the podium in Group N. The third round will feature three stages, each spanning 11km, 12km and 12km, respectively.

An upbeat Soomar said ahead of the rally, β€œI will try my best to be on the podium, but this is a race in which anything can happen. I hope everyone finishes the race safely.”


Titles for Muneer, Kira in junior meet

Talented Omani youngster Muneer al Rawahi defeated Sanskar Dubey in the final to win the boys' U14 title, while Kira Malakhova edged past Maria-Antigone Rumpf in the title clash to lift the girls' U14 crown at the Ras al Hamra Oman Open junior tennis tournament that concluded recently.

Hilal Ahmed, the CEO of Village Crafts, gave away the awards at the presentation ceremony of the competition in which 60 youngsters took part at the Ras al Hamra Club.
