The gulf between a top domestic football team and a second-division side was underlined when OPL team and former champion Saham pulverised Bidiya 9-0 in the knockout round of 32 at the His Majesty's Cup Football Championship on Tuesday.

Playing at the Sohar Sports Complex, Saham toyed with its rival, slamming five goals in the first half and four after the break.

Saham was joined by Nizwa, Al Shabab and Mirbat in the round of 16 on Tuesday. In the first match of the day's four fixtures, Al Shabab rode Oman international Younus al Mushaifri's twin efforts to get past Ahli-Sidab 2-1 at the Seeb Sports Stadium.

Mushaifri found the target in the 29th and 80th minutes. At Sohar, there was a riot of goals from Saham.

The floodgates opened in the 21st minute when Alexander scored. Four minutes later, it was the turn of Abdulmoen Marzouqi, while Oman international Mohsin Jawhar hammered a brace in four minutes (34th and 38th). Alexander made it 5-0 in first-half injury-time. Jawhar then scored again shortly after the second half began.

The last three goals came in the final ten minutes through Faisal al Breiki, Marzouki and Yousuf al Farsi. Nizwa recorded a solitarygoal win over Al Bashayer at the Nizwa Sports Complex, the strike coming in 45th minute through Mohammed al Shadly.

In the day's second match at the Seeb Sports Stadium, Mirbat knocked Al Musannah out 4-1 in a penalty shootout after the teams were locked 1-1 in regulation-time.
