Defending champion Al Arouba faces a tricky clash against former two-time winner Al Suwaiq in the knockout round of 16 of the His Majesty's Cup Football Championship at the Sohar Sports Complex on Wednesday.

The match kicks off at 8pm. Also, nine-time champion Fanja takes on Oman club in another match at the Seeb Sports Stadium (5pm kick-off), while in the other matches scheduled for Wednesday, Mirbat plays Al Rustaq (8pm) and Nizwa takes on Al Khabourah (5pm). Arouba, which has won the title four times, has been in impressive form in the Omantel Professional League (OPL), and currently leads the 14-team table with 25 points after 13 rounds with seven wins. Suwaiq has five wins in the OPL and is fifth with 22 points.

Arouba overcame its traditional rival, Sur, 2-1 in the previous round, while Suwaiq had an easy passage, winning 2-0 over lower-division club Dibba. Record title-holder Fanja is up against first-division team Oman and is expected to have an easier outing than Arouba.

The Mirbat-Rustaq match-up at the Seeb Sports Stadium features both first division sides, while OPL team Khabourah will take on Nizwa, another first-division side, at the Sohar Sports Complex. Nizwa and Oman are leading their respective groups in the first division league.

Mirbat upset Al Musannah in the earlier round, while Rustaq got the better of Bausher and Khabourah scored a scrappy solitary-goal win over Jalan to enter the pre-quarterfinals.

On Thursday, the other four matches pits eight-time winner Dhofar against Al Nasr in a Salalah derby, Al Wahda locks horns with hosts Salalah, Muscat hosts Sohar at the Seeb Sports Stadium, followed by Saham taking on Al Shabab at the same venue.
