Azzani takes over as Olympic team coach

The Oman Football Association (OFA) officially unveiled Hamad al Azzani as the Olympic U22 team's coach at the OFA headquarters in Seeb on Sunday.

OFA chairman Sayyid Khalid al Busaidy said, “Azzani has signed a contract that will see him take charge as Oman’s Olympic team coach from June 1 and the deal will be till December 2016.”

OPL champion Al Nahda's coach Azzani takes over from Frenchman Phillipe Burle after the latter was dismissed in April.

Azzani, a former national team coach, led Nahda to the OPL crown and also to the final of the HM's Cup and the semifinals of the GCC Club Cup Championship this season.

Azzani said, “I am happy to take over as the Olympic team coach. My immediate task will be to prepare the team for the GCC tournament in Qatar in August. I will call a camp of 26 players starting on June 14.”

In February, Sayyid Khalid had said that the OFA will lay emphasis on appointing Omani coaches. Azzani becomes the third Omani to lead an age-group team (U22) after Rasheed Jaber (U19) and Yaqoob al Sabahi (U16) were named in February.
