Visitors to Salalah highest ever at more than 800,000

Muscat -

This year’s khareef season in Dhofar witnessed the highest number of tourists ever recorded.

As per the National Centre for Statistics and Information, the total number of visitors to Salalah at the end of September 9 stood at 816,894, a rise of 28.5 per cent over the same period of 2017, which recorded 635,606.

Statistics show that 72.3 per cent of the visitors to Salalah were Omanis, 9.3 per cent Emiratis and 9.3 per cent GCC citizens. The year 2016 held the record for the highest number of visitors (652,986) till this year.

The khareef season runs from June 21 to September 21.

The Tropical Cyclone Mekunu that hit the region late May actually turned out to be a blessing in disguise as the monsoon season started early in Dhofar, bringing to life springs that were dry for years and turning the mountains green with lush overgrowth as early as the beginning of July.
