TRC board reviews research and innovation support programmes

H H Sayyid Shihab bin Tariq al Said, advisor to His Majesty Sultan Qaboos bin Said, and chairman of The Research Council (TRC) board on Monday held a meeting to review the progress of research and innovation support programmes.

A press release stated that the board discussed several issues and projects including the proposal to restructure the Open Research Grants (ORG) programme. Since its establishment in 2009, ORG has funded nearly 160 projects.

The board approved the restructuring proposal and ORG will be split into three support programmes. The board also reviewed the council’s efforts to support innovation through the Individual Innovation Support Program. It praised the Oman Chamber of Commerce and Industry (OCCI) Innovation Award.

It is being organised by TRC and OCCI. During the meeting, the board also discussed the proposal of collaboration between TRC and PDO for the management of the Institute of Integration of Advanced Technology Integration (IATI). The aim is to establish it as an independent institute through joint funding and develop innovative products and marketable solutions with focus on applied research.

The progress made on ‘Masadir’ of Oman Virtual Science Library (OVSL) project was among the issues reviewed by the TRC board. ‘Masadir’ has become part of the Oman Research and Education Network in partnership with Omantel.

The project is now at the execution stage. TRC board members also reviewed several reports like the outcome of the International Advisory board meeting in March and the report on the council’s operational plan and budget for 2018.
