‘Service fee reduction on patents to boost intellectual property sector’

Muscat -

The decision to reduce service fee for patents, utility models and industrial designs for students, research centres and small enterprises reflects the vigorous efforts made to develop the intellectual property (IP) sector, said Ali bin Khamis al Alawi, chairman of the Board of Directors of Omani Intellectual Property Society.

The Ministry of Commerce and Industry’s Decision 206/2018 was issued recently to encourage inventors and researchers and simplify different administrative procedures while highlighting innovation as of significant national economic value.

According to Alawi the decision will also help all concerned and specialised groups to strengthen innovation aspects in the different segments, thereby contributing to the progress needed in the field of intellectual property in the sultanate.

He also pointed out that the Omani Intellectual Property Society is fully aware that the decision and its related outcomes will soon yield results.

Alawi also said the Omani Intellectual Property Society is looking forward to informing all categories of the society regarding the intellectual property rights and seeking to disseminate awareness among employees in the public and private sectors, universities, schools, employers, companies, inventors and all segments of society, and all scientific and literary disciplines.

He added that the Omani Intellectual Property Society seeks to maintain contact with institutions, associations and individuals so as to respond to any IP-related queries, explain the methods for protecting intellectual property rights and provide information.
