MSC issues guidelines on handling emergencies at sea

Muscat – The Maritime Security Centre (MSC) has issued a set of public safety guidelines on how to deal with emergencies at sea, stressing that preparedness is one of the most important requirements for maritime safety.

In a safety advisory, the centre urged boat operators and sea-goers to ensure that vessels are properly equipped and that passengers are aware of emergency procedures before heading out to sea. The advisory is part of ongoing efforts to enhance maritime awareness and reduce risks associated with recreational and fishing activities in Oman’s territorial waters.

According to the centre, boat owners should first ensure that all vessels carry essential safety equipment, including a well-equipped first-aid kit and emergency tools that can be used in unexpected situations. Reliable maritime communication systems should also be available on board to enable swift contact with authorities or rescue services if needed.

MSC further emphasised the importance of briefing all passengers about emergency procedures before departure. Passengers should be aware of the steps to take during emergencies and understand the basic safety instructions issued by the crew.

Among the key measures highlighted in the advisory is the need to be familiar with evacuation and rescue procedures. The centre noted that knowing how to respond quickly during incidents such as engine failure, fire or sudden weather changes can significantly reduce risks and help protect lives.

Training on the proper use of safety equipment was also highlighted as a crucial element of maritime preparedness. Boat operators and crew members are encouraged to regularly check safety devices and ensure these are ready for use at all times.

The centre pointed out that promoting a culture of maritime safety and preparedness contributes to protecting both people and property while ensuring safer navigation across the sultanate’s waters. The centre operates round the clock to monitor maritime activities and coordinate responses to incidents in Oman’s maritime zone in cooperation with military, security and civil authorities.
