Muscat – The Geminid meteor shower, one of the year’s most spectacular annual astronomical events, will reach its peak activity in Oman on Saturday evening, December 13, and into the predawn hours of Sunday, December 14.
The best viewing conditions are expected during the period before the moonrise, specifically between 1:00 am and 4:00 am on Sunday morning. Observers looking towards the eastern horizon from a location free of light pollution may witness a theoretical maximum of up to 120 colourful meteors per hour.
The shower is caused by debris from the asteroid Phaethon 3200, with the meteors appearing as relatively slow-moving, vibrant streaks of yellow and green light.
