Muscat – A student team representing the Omani Film Society has won second place in the Talent Camp competition at the 43rd Fajr International Film Festival in Iran. The festival, held in Shiraz from November 26 to December 3, brought together emerging filmmakers from several countries.

The Omani entry, a short film titled Life in Shiraz, was produced by Hamad al Rashdi from the University of Technology and Applied Sciences (UTAS) Sur, and Habib al Hasani from UTAS Muscat. Society board members Mohammed al Ajmi, Dr Jinan al Issa, and Mohammed al Kindy were also part of the delegation.

The film portrays the cultural and human dimensions of Shiraz through a visual narrative that highlights the technical and creative abilities of young Omani filmmakers. It was produced as part of the festival’s Talent Camp, which offers practical training and mentorship in directing, cinematography, scriptwriting and editing.

Dr Jinan said the Talent Camp provides university students with an opportunity to work in a professional cinematic environment. She noted that participants engage in intensive workshops and produce short films evaluated by international juries and film experts, while also benefiting from cultural exchange with peers from different countries.

Mohammed al Kindy, Chairman of the Omani Film Society and a member of the main festival jury, praised the collaboration between the Society and UTAS. He said the award reflects the growing capabilities of Omani youth in filmmaking and their readiness to compete internationally. He added that such achievements contribute to strengthening Oman’s cinematic movement and encouraging broader participation in global film events.

The Fajr International Film Festival is regarded as a key platform for screening feature films, hosting workshops and showcasing new cinematic projects. The event attracts directors, producers and industry professionals from around the world.

Winning at the Talent Camp is considered an important recognition, as participants are required to complete a full short film within a limited timeframe and meet professional production standards.
